Judah and Karina Devadoss were both taught from a young age to help and care for others. When they got married in 2021, their joint faith inspired them to continue prioritizing the needs of others. “We want to be living out our values through our philanthropy,” Karina shares.

In early 2022, the couple found HopeWell after searching for local organizations that met 2 important criteria:

Support children experiencing foster care — The mission is personal to them because several people in their lives were adopted from the foster care system or are currently foster parents.
Have solid ratings on charity sites like GuideStar — They wanted to make sure they’d be supporting an organization that stewarded its money well.

That same year, Jonah and Karina became monthly, sustaining donors to HopeWell. As they shared, “Not every young couple might be able to do this — but for us, we intentionally plan that rent comes out of the budget first, then necessities, and then donations as a given. It helps us stay accountable.”

They appreciate the transparency HopeWell provides in how donors’ money is used and, even more importantly, are glad to be part of an organization that supports children and families at many different stages. “HopeWell has a holistic approach that we appreciate — supporting kids not just when they enter the foster care system, but also trying to prevent that from happening in the first place. And helping them after the foster care system ends and they age out.”

When thinking about foster care, the Devadoss family explain that it’s much more complex than they initially thought. But they also stress that there are many different ways to get involved and help, whether it’s building community around foster parents, children currently in the system, or adults who previously experienced foster care.
